Today the Stein campaign announced success in petition drives led by Greens and Volunteers for Jill Stein groups in Alaska, Kansas, Maryland, Washington, and Wisconsin. In each of these states, state elections authories have received more than enough qualified signatures to place the Green Party or the Stein/Honkala ticket on the ballot.

On August 8, the Green Party of Alaska is submitting approximately 4,500 signatures, to obtain “Limited Political Party” status in Alaska. The requirement is 3,273 valid signatures. “Limited political status” means a party is qualified only for the limited purpose of placing its presidential and vice-presidential nominees on the ballot.

The Tennessean, Nashville’s daily newspaper, has this story about the refusal of the Tennessee Secretary of State to list the Green Party and Constitution Party nominees for public office on the state’s web page, until August 30. Obviously the Secretary of State is hoping that the Sixth Circuit will remove those candidates from the ballot.

On August 1, Pennsylvania state election officials rejected the petitions of an independent candidate for U.S. House, 2nd district. The reason is that his ballot label is “independent.” The day before, another candidate with the ballot label “independent” had also filed in the same race. The state cited a law that says two parties with the same name cannot both appear on the ballot for the same office. Read more »

Even though the Natural Law Party ceased to exist as a national political party in 2004, it is still ballot-qualified in Michigan. It recently held its state convention and nominated Rocky Anderson for president. In 2008 the party had nominated Ralph Nader for president, and in 2004 it had nominated Walt Brown (Socialist Party nominee) for president.
