Two parties with the same bad ideas don’t represent the extent of electoral choices in 2012.

Last fall, GQ ran a profile of former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, then a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, under the headline “Is This the Sanest Man Running for President?” The piece noted that in 2003, Johnson scaled Mount Everest with a broken leg, and in 2005, broke his back paragliding off the highest mountain in Maui. “Sanest”? The Oregon Secretary of State recently released a voter registration tally as of June 26. This is the first monthly tally to include Americans Elect, because the party wasn’t ballot-qualified until May. The new tally can be seen here. Americans Elect had three registered members as of the time of this tally: two in Lane County and one in Marion County.

The Oregon Green Party did not run any statewide candidates in 2010, so that jeopardized its ballot status for future years. Oregon permits a party to remain ballot-qualified either by having polled 1% for a statewide race in the last election, or by keeping or restoring its registration to one-half of 1%. According to the Kansas Secretary of State, in June 2012, the ballot-qualified Reform Party nominated Chuck Baldwin for President and Joseph Martin for Vice-President, and certified these candidates to the Secretary of State.

The American Independent Party of California will choose a presidential nominee on August 11, in Sacramento. The meeting will be at Perkos Restaurant at 925 Third Street, at the corner of J Street. The Saturday session starts at 9:30 a.m. and is set to last until 5 p.m. There are also proceedings at the same location on Friday evening, August 10.

On July 18, the Justice Party filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court against the Hawaii petition deadline for newly-qualifying parties. That deadline is February 23. The case is Justice Party v Nago, cv-12-403. The case also challenges the Hawaii practice of disqualifying signatures signed by rural voters, when those rural voters show their post office box as their address. On July 25, attorneys for the Pennsyvlania elections office filed a brief in Constitution Party v Aichele, the case filed by the Constitution, Green and Libertarian Parties over the unique Pennsylvania system that puts petitioning groups at risk of paying court costs of up to $110,000 if their petitions are found insufficient. The state’s brief says the parties don’t have standing to challenge the system. The case is in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia, 5:12-cv-2726. Read more »
In February 2012, the Socialist Equality Party had announced its presidential and vice-presidential nominees, but had not said the ticket expected to qualify for the ballot in any state. In 2008 the Socialist Equality Party has also announced a ticket, but that ticket did not qualify for the ballot in any state.
