Jon Barrie is the U.S. Senate nominee of the Independent American Party of New Mexico. On June 26, he filed 10,279 signatures to be on the November ballot. On June 26, Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted ruled that Gregory Jolivette cannot be an independent candidate for the legislature, even though he submitted enough valid signatures to run for the 51st State House seat. See this story.

On June 22, Georgia filed a motion to dismiss the ballot access lawsuit filed last month by the Green Party and the Constitution Party. Although the state’s brief is 17 pages long, not once does it mention either of the precedents that the case relies on. The lawsuit is Green Party of Georgia v State of Georgia and Brian Kemp, 1:12-cv-1822. The lawsuit charges that Georgia’s ballot access law, as applied to presidential candidates, requires too many signatures. Read more »

This San Francisco Bay Guardian article describes the political maneuvering in San Francisco concerning Instant Runoff Voting and a proposed repeal of that system, which was first approved in San Francisco in 2002. Earlier this year, an attempt to repeal IRV was defeated in the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Now a new attempt, to repeal it only for the executive offices, is under way.

June 25 was the petition deadline in Illinois for independent candidates, and nominees of unqualified parties. Six presidential candidates submitted a petition: Stewart Alexander, Socialist; Virgil Goode, Constitution; Gary Johnson, Libertarian; Jill Stein, Green; Rocky Anderson, independent; and Michael W. On June 25, the Michigan Libertarian Party filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Detroit, seeking an order requiring the Michigan Secretary of State, Ruth Johnson, to list Gary Johnson on the ballot as the Libertarian presidential nominee. The Peace & Freedom Party will choose its presidential nominee on the weekend of August 4-5. The location will be near the Los Angeles International Airport. The decision will be made by members of the State Central Committee, who are collectively all the members of all the county central committees. On June 23, the Independent Party, which is a ballot-qualified party in New Mexico, held a state convention and nominated Rocky Anderson for President. Anderson is also the nominee of the Justice Party, but the Justice Party is not on the ballot in New Mexico.
The Independent Party is ballot-qualified because in 2008, it polled over one-half of 1% of the vote for its presidential nominee, Ralph Nader. Nader polled .64% in 2008 in New Mexico. Thanks to Bill Van Allen for this news.
