Nevada Constitution Party Wins a Non-Partisan Election

On June 12, a registered member of the Constitution Party was elected to a local non-partisan office in Baker, Nevada. He is Terrance Stedman, elected to the Baker General Improvement Board. In Nevada, the Constitution Party’s name is the Independent American Party. Baker is in eastern Nevada, and has the headquarters of Nevada’s only National Park, the Great Basin Park. San Francisco City Committee to Hear Proposal to Eliminate Instant Runoff Voting for Citywide Offices

California Prints New Registration Cards that List Americans Elect

Since 1976, California voter registration forms have listed all the qualified parties, and provided a check box for each one. New registration cards have now been issued to reflect that Americans Elect is now a qualified party.

Question 14 of the form asks, “Do you want to choose a political party preference?” Underneath that question, on the left, there is a check box labeled “No Party Preference.” Read more »

Bernie Sanders Files Petition to Run for Re-Election as an Independent Candidate

On June 13, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, the independent from Vermont, filed a petition to to run for re-election as an independent candidate. He also filed a petition to be in the Democratic primary for the same office. However, in the past, he has filed to run as a Democrat, and then he always wins the Democratic primary, and then withdraws his Democratic Party nomination. Ohio Senate Passes Bill, Saving Ballot Status for Major Party Presidential Nominees

On June 12, the Ohio Senate unanimously passed HB 509, which moves the deadline from August to September for large qualified parties to certify their presidential and vice-presidential nominees. Without this bill, the Ohio deadline, if enforced, would have made it impossible for both major parties to meet the deadline, because their national conventions are so late this year. Read more »

New Hampshire Bill, Restricting Flexibility of Newly-Qualifying Parties, is Signed into Law

On May 31, New Hampshire Governor John Lynch signed SB 236 into law. It says that newly-qualifying parties must identify their nominees in June, even though the petition to qualify that party is not due until August. The bill takes effect immediately.
