Americans Elect Web Page Posts New Signature Total for Ballot Access Petitions

Americans Elect’s web page now says 1,348,312 signatures have been obtained on petitions around the nation, to get that party on the ballot. The page seems to update that figure each Thursday. Last week’s total had been 1,262,665. The vast majority of these signatures have been obtained in California, where 1,030,040 valid signatures are needed. Read more »

Libertarians say Obama’s Afghanistan policy is a failure

WASHINGTON – Libertarian Party Chair Mark Hinkle responded to President Obama’s June 22 speech with the following comments today:

“President Obama’s speech was disappointing, but not surprising. The withdrawals he announced are painfully inadequate. Obama’s withdrawals, even if they are carried out as he described, will still leave about 70,000 American troops in Afghanistan, probably for years to come. Read more »

In a State renowned for political characters, Dick Randolph held a first and only and still does: He was the Alaska statewide candidate who offered a full-fledged liberty agenda to the Alaska people. Ohio Legislature Expected to Pass Bill on June 23 Moving Petition Deadline for New Parties to February

The Ohio Senate is scheduled to pass HB 194 on Thursday, June 23. This is an omnibus election law bill backed by the Secretary of State. It moves the primary from March to May. Existing law says the primary in presidential years, for all office, is in March (although in midterm years it is already in May). Read more »

New York Legislature is About to Adjourn, Having Passed Only One Significant Election Law Bill

The New York legislature is expected to adjourn for the year early in the morning of June 24. The only significant election law bill that passed this year is A8363/S5753, which moves the presidential primary from February to April. The bill to set up a statewide initiative system, S709, never made any headway in the Assembly, although it did pass the Senate. Also, the national popular vote plan bill, S4208, passed the Senate but not the Assembly. Read more »

Louisiana Legislature Passes Bill to Allow “Independent” Label on Ballot for Independent Candidates

On June 20, the Louisiana Senate passed HB 533 by 26-9. This is the Secretary of State’s omnibus election law bill. Among other things, it lets independent candidates for all office have “independent” on the ballot next to their names. Previously, only independent presidential candidates could have that label. The bill also removes the names of presidential elector candidates from the ballot. Read more »
