The Republican candidate for mayor of Tucson, Arizona has dropped out of the race due to a signature challenge on his nominating petitions. This is of interest to third partisans for two reasons. The Washington state Libertarian Party’s 63-page brief in the 9th circuit in Washington State Republican Party v Washington State Grange was filed on June 21. The brief was one day late, so the attorney has asked the 9th circuit to forgive that. Assuming the other side doesn’t object, the brief will probably be accepted. Read more »
The June 22 print edition of the New York Times carries this Thomas L. Friedman column, which seems to advocate a new party in 2012 that would run on a particular platform (described by Friedman, with ideas endorsed by him). Friedman says the new party probably wouldn’t win in 2012, but “it doesn’t have to win to be effective” because if the party attracted substantial support, it would shape the agenda of the two major parties. On June 22, the Prohibition Party national convention nominated Jack Fellure for President, and Toby Davis for Vice-President Fellure is a retired engineer who lives in West Virginia. Davis is a church pastor who lives in Mississippi. Read more »
