Missouri Ballot Access Bill Passes Senate

On May 10, the Missouri Senate passed SB 282, an omnibus election law bill. Among other things, it repeals the typographical error that forces groups circulating a petition to qualify the party to list a presidential nominee on the petition (if the group believes it will eventually have a presidential nominee). Oklahoma Governor Signs Bill Setting March 1 Petition Deadline for New Parties

On May 10, Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin signed HB 1615. It moves the primary (for office other than President) from July to June, and it moves the petition deadline for a new party from May 1 to March 1.

California Democratic Legislators Advance Bills Injuring Ballot Access for New Parties, Initiatives

On April 24, the California Senate passed SB 205, which makes it illegal to pay voter registration workers on a per-registration card basis. All the newly-qualifying parties in California since 1970 have qualified for the ballot by persuading voters (equal to 1% of the last gubernatorial vote) to register into the party. Read more »

80% of Americans Would Consider Voting for a 3rd Party/Independent Presidential Candidate

The recent Reason-Rupe poll finds that 80% of Americans say they would or might consider voting for an Independent or third-party presidential candidate in the 2012 election. Specifically, 60% said they would consider voting for an independent or third-party candidate, 20% said they might consider, 17% said they would not consider, and 3% said they did not know whether they would consider voting for an Independent or third-party presidential candidate.
